Die Europäische Union (EU) konnte sich nach wochenlangen Verhandlungen endlich auf einen Rettungsplan für das finanziell stark angeschlagene Griechenland einigen. Im Rahmen eines Sondergipfels konnten sich die Regierungschefs von 17 EU-Ländern auf eine Rettung verständigen. Nach dem Rettungsplan sollen private Gläubiger wie Banken und Versicherungen auf 20 Prozent ihrer Forderungen verzichten. Die Verluste würden sich dadurch für die Gläubiger bis zum Jahr 2014 auf 37 Milliarden Euro belaufen. Die EU-Mitgliedsländer und der Internationale Währungsfonds gewähren Griechenland neue Kreditgarantien im Umfang von 109 Milliarden Euro.
Ein Jahr zuvor erhielt das Land schon einmal 110 Milliarden Euro an Kreditgarantien. Der teilweise Schuldernerlass bedeutet für Griechenland bei der Umschuldung im September eine Zeit lang zahlungsunfähig zu sein. Der Euro-Rettungsfonds EFSF soll außerdem griechische Anleihen an der Börse aufkaufen. Die Hilfskredite für das südeuropäische Pleiteland haben nun eine Laufzeit von 15 statt 7,5 Jahren. Der Zinssatz fiel um 1,0 auf 3,5 Prozent und bedeutet eine Ersparnis von 30 Milliarden Euro an Zinsen für Griechenland.
