Der Internationale Währungsfonds (IWF) hat seine gesamten Goldreserven von über 400 Tonnen im Jahr 2010 verkauft. Die verbliebenen 32 Tonnen sind nun verkauft worden und der Käufer unbekannt. Jedoch wird China als möglicher Käufer in den Medien genannt. Im September 2009 hatte der IWF sein Goldverkaufsprogramm gestartet um mit den daraus erzielten Einnahmen milliardenschwere Kredite für notleidende Länder finanzieren zu können. Der Goldverkauf des IWF belief sich im letzten Jahr auf 200 Tonnen und wurden von Indien erworben.
Der Goldpreis ist in den vergangenen zwölf Monaten um 30 Prozent auf knapp 1400 US-Dollar gestiegen und Edelmetall-Experten rechnen in den nächsten Jahren mit einem Anstieg auf 2.000 US-Dollar. Die Gesamteinnahmen für die nun verkauften 403 Tonnen dürften sich auf über 40 Milliarden
US-Dollar belaufen und damit können Milliardenkredite problemlos finanziert werden. Die Privatanleger investieren verstärkt in Gold indem sie Goldbarren oder Goldmünzen kaufen. Generell sollte sich der Gold-Anteil auf zehn Prozent des aufgebauten Vermögens belaufen.
